Approximately 75 "Shanah Tovah" postcards. Different publishers, Germany, Austria, Britain, USA and elsewhere, [first decades of the 20th century].
Among the postcards: a postcards depicting romantic scenes such as smiling children, flower bouquets, pigeons carrying greeting cards and birds surrounded by blossoming branches; postcards depicting scenes from the Jewish cycle of life and biblical scenes; and some postcards depicting Zionist motifs and immigration to the USA.
One postcard is undivided.
Average size: 9X14 cm. Fair overall condition. Blemishes, tears, creases and stains. Worming and peeling of color to a number of postcards. 49 postcards were used.

Four Real Photo postcards – High Commissioner Herbert Samuel in Jaffa. [Photograph: H. Hanoch]. Jaffa, 1920.
1–2. "The landing of Sir H. Samuel at Jaffa" (June 30, 1920), two postcards. One of the postcards depicts the High Commissioner reviewing an honor guard, and the other depicts him standing near his car.
Both postcards are captioned and dated in the plate.
3–4. "Sir H. Samuel visits the battleship the Emperor of India," two postcards. Both depict the High Commissioner on the deck of the Emperor of India beside a naval officer. Both are captioned in the plate.
Sir Herbert Samuel was appointed High Commissioner for Palestine before the League of Nations gave its official approval to a British mandate for Palestine. He landed on the shore of Palestine on June 30, 1920 in order to take office.
9X 14 cm. Good condition. Stains, creases and blemishes.

1. "Bilder fun dem pogromirten bobroysker gegent". Postcard with a photograph of two orphans who survived the riots in Babruysk (Belarus), with two nurses. Published by Comité Executif de la Conference Universelle Juive de Secours [executive committee of the universal Jewish emergency conference], Paris, [ca. 1920]. Printed on the bottom and on verso is an appeal for donations, in Yiddish, French and English.
2. "Martyrs of Tel Aviv 1929". A real-photo postcard by H. Aroshkes [Zvi Oron], portraying bodies of two victims in the Tel Aviv riots – [Baruch] Berkovich and Dr. [Moshe] Harari. Titled in the plate and stamped on the back with photographer's stamp.
3. "Starving children in Berdinsk". Printed card with a photograph of a group of starving children and an appeal: "Jewish children! Look at your small friends […] ask your parents to pity them […]". No publisher or date indicated.
Size varies. Good overall condition.

Three postcards and a photograph of the Levant Fair exhibition. Tel-Aviv, [ca. 1930s].
1-2. Two postcards published by Palphot, Tel-Aviv, "Photograph Z. Kluger" [Zoltan Kluger]: main entrance to the fair and photograph of the British Pavillion.
3. Postcard with the photograph of the Palestine Industries Pavilion ("Palace of Local Products") at the end of the entrance avenue to the fair. Stamped on the back with two stamps: the Flying Camel stamp with the year 1934; photographer Eugen Spiegel's stamp.
4. Photograph of the Flying Camel sculpture by architect Aryeh Elhanani. On the back appears an ink-stamp: "Photo Erde – Ephraim Erde". Dated by hand on the back – 1936.
Approx. 14X9 cm.Condition varies. Good overall condition. Two postcards with stains on the back and one postcard with minor blemishes on the front.

Two cards with "Shanah Tovah" greetings, sent by Palmach soldiers during the Independence War, [ca. 1948].
1. Photograph of two Palmach soldiers, Avraham Atiya and Amnon Brieger, by a Schwarzlose machine gun. A "Shanah Tovah" greeting appears on the photograph (in the plate). The photograph is titled on the back, in handwriting: "Avraham Atiya and myself on the Castel during the siege".
6X9 cm. Good condition.
2. Card with a photograph of a mountainous view, captioned "LeShanah Tovah, 1948" and bearing the Palmach emblem. A paper label is attached to the card with a handwritten greeting: "to the hospital, the doctors, nurses and workers! Wishing you Shanah Tovah, good health and recovery, one of the patients, Emanuel G.".
6.5X9.5 cm. Good condition. A few stains.

Lot 516 Collection of IDF "Shanah Tovah" Greeting Cards – 1948-1949

Twenty nine IDF "Shanah Tovah" cards. (1948-1949) [some cards are possibly from later years].
Most cards are folded in half; on the inside is a space for adding the sender's name and a mounted independence war photograph, and on the outside – a "window" through which the photograph is seen (the photographs differ from each other: fighters, armored vehicles, aircrafts, parades, and more). The collection also includes a number of greeting cards for special units: navy, Negev Brigade, "Harel" Brigade, "Battalion 79", and other units.
Most of the cards bear the sender's name, dedications and greetings written by hand, and some bear postmarks and Israeli postal stamps.
Enclosed: A card with the IDF emblem and a frame with a soldier's photograph on top. On the bottom is an inscription: "Photo Kugel Haifa".
Size and condition vary. Good overall condition.

Jerusalem eingenommen: Die Heilige Stadt von den Türken befreit [Jerusalem Captured: The Holy City Wrested from the Turks], a poster printed to mark the capture of Jerusalem by the British, [ca. 1917]. German.
A panoramic photograph of Jerusalem appears at the top of the poster, with German text about the city’s capture beneath. Within the text are three other photographs of Jerusalem and a photograph of General Allenby.
This poster was printed in several languages, including English, Spanish, and French.
58X83.5 cm. Fair condition. Folding marks and creases. Minor stains. Tears at the edges and along the folding lines, most of them restored. Open tears near the corners, restored.

Photographs of buildings in various cities in Palestine (by Yitzhak Kalter), surmounted by the Hebrew inscription "We have distributed 60,000 Palestinian pounds as building loans… 200 families have acquired homes".
On the bottom right corner appears the logo of the company, in red and white.
92.5X62.5 cm. Good condition. Creases and folding marks. Some minor tears. The entire poster is mounted on thin acid-free paper.

"On the day of our first celebration of the State of Israel’s establishment… Keren HaYesod sends its blessing to the whole House of Israel in Israel and in the Diaspora". Illustrated poster issued by Keren HaYesod in honor of the State of Israel’s first Independence Day. Tel Aviv: HaPoel HaTza’ir Cooperative Press, 1949. Design: The Shamir Brothers.
A congratulatory message from Keren HaYesod in honor of the State of Israel’s first Independence Day appears at the center of the poster: "Just as we were privileged to establish our state, so may we be privileged to improve and glorify it, and gather its children within it from the four corners of the earth….". Around the message is a frame of grapevines and oranges. At the top of the frame is a cloud issuing trumpets, a shofar, and Israeli flags. At the bottom of the frame is the date: "5 Iyar, 1949."
70X50 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and minor blemishes. Traces of pasting at the corners. Folding marks and creases. Tears (some open) at the edges and on the fold lines. The entire poster is mounted on thin acid-free paper.

"Do not vote for collaborators and those who hand over their own brothers!". Election poster issued by the Herut party led by Menachem Begin. Printer and year not indicated. [1949?]
Poster in red and black, with the caption "Do not vote for collaborators and those who hand over their own brothers!" in the center. Hands pointing fingers at the caption are printed on both sides of it. The hands on the right side are bound in chains, with the names of the prisons and detention camps where members of the underground movements were held: Acre, Mizra, and Tzrifin; Latrun and Bethlehem; Sudan, Kenya; the Jaffa, Jerusalem, and Cairo prisons.
The poster, which was presumably printed before the elections for the first Knesset (the Constituent Assembly), was aimed at the Mapai and Mapam political parties, whose members were involved in the "saison" ("the hunting season," an operation in which members of the Irgun were handed over to the British).
35X49 cm. Good-fair condition. Foxing. Folding marks and creases. A few blemishes and small tears (one tear is reinforced with acid-free tape).
