Jüdisches Ceremoniel [Jewish Ceremonies], by Paul Christian Kirchner. Nuremberg: Peter Conrad Monath, [1730s]. German.
Detailed description of Jewish customs and traditions in 18th century Germany, by Paul Christian Kirchner. Illustrated with 30 engraved plates (all, except the frontispiece, folding), depicting various scenes such as laying Tefillin (phylacteries), the ceremony of halitza, Sabbath and holidays in the synagogue, etc.
The work was first published in 1716, without the engravings. Kirchner converted from Judaism to Christianity several years prior to writing his book, in the foreword to which he stated his intent to convince other Jews to convert to Christianity as well.
The present edition is similar to the 1724 edition, edited by Sebastian Jacob Jungendres, who corrected mistakes and toned down some of Kirchnerws more vehement remarks. The imprint date is only partially indicated, reading "173". The present copy includes a handwritten addition of the digit 6, making the year "1736".
[5] ff., 226, [26] pp., [30] engraved plates (all but two bound after text), 20 cm. Good condition. Stains. Minor tears to several plates, not affecting prints. Card boards, worn; abrasions to spine, with losses.
