The Religious Ceremonies and Customs of the Several Nations of the Known World […] Vol. I: Containing the Ceremonies of the Jews, and the Roman Catholicks, by Bernard Picart (1673-1733). London: William Jackson for Claude Du Bosc, 1733. English. Vol. I only. Incomplete copy.
English translation of the monumental work on world religions, written and edited by writer and printer Jean Frédéric Bernard and illustrated by Bernard Picart, one of the most important engravers of the 18th century (as Frédéric chose to remain anonymous, the work was printed under Picart's name only). This volume discusses the history and customs of the Jews and the Roman Catholics. It includes essays on various Jewish sects: Orthodox Jews, Ashkenazi and Portuguese (Sephardic) Jews, Samaritans, Karaites, Sadducees, Chinese Jews, and more, alongside fine engravings.
The engraving in this volume depict, among other scenes, the inauguration of the Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam, various Jewish customs, ceremonies and holidays (such as the wedding ceremony, laying tefillin, circumcision and redemption of the first-born son, the Passover seder, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah), ceremonial objects, and Catholic ceremonies and customs. Several in-text illustrations, engraved vignettes and initials.
Incomplete copy. Missing on leaf of text and two engraved plates ("A solemn high mass celebrated in the cathedral church of Paris", "A theatre erected in St. Petrs Church").
