Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae, Oder: Reise-Buch über die ganze heilige Schrift [Travel Book Through Holy Scriptures], by Heinrich Bünting. Erfurt, Germany: Johann David Jungnicol, 1757. German.
The book entitled "Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae", written by the German priest, theologian, and cartographer Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606), was first published in 1581. Since then, it was reprinted in multiple editions and translated into a host of different languages. It was, in its day, the most complete and comprehensive of the available accounts regarding biblical geography. The present copy represents a newer edition of the book, with numerous addenda and modifications that do not appear in earlier editions. This particular edition was printed by the publisher Johann David Jungnicol in Erfurt, Germany, first in 1752, then again in 1754, and, for the third time, in 1757 (this edition).
The book deals for the most part in chronicling the journeys through the Land of Israel of the main characters of the Bible. In addition, the book ncludes essays and studies on the history, chronology, and geography of the Land of Israel as documented in sacred texts (with a separate title page to each section).
The book contains 39 engraved plates (9 of them folded) – one opposite the main title page, and 38 more, including maps (of the Mediterranean Basin, Holy Land, Nazareth, Damascus, and other subjects), various illustrations (the Temple, Tabernacle, Temple vessels, the High Priest, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, coins, and more), imagined portraits of the Twelve Apostles, and more.
