Itineraire de Paris a Jerusalem et de Jerusalem a Paris, by François-René de Chateaubriand. Paris: Le Normant, 1812. Second edition, two parts in two volumes. French.
Account of a Journey to Jerusalem by François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848), one of the founders of the Romantic Movement in French literature. During his journey, between July 1806 and June 1807, Chateaubriand visited Constantinople, Jaffa, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem, and other places. This book was published after his return to Paris, and contains many references and quotes from classic literature and the Bible.
The first volume includes a folding map by French cartographer and engraver Pierre M. Lapie (1777-1850), showing the route of Chateaubriand's journey.
Part I: IX, 427 pp, [1] f + folding map. Part II: [1], 391, [1] pp. 21.5 cm. Good condition. Stains. Small tears to edges of some leaves (nor affecting text). Worming to leaves and bindings, slightly affecting text. Card bindings with leather spines. Blemishes to bindings.
