Apparatus biblicus, sive manuductio ad Sacram Scripturam, tum clariùs, tum faciliùs intelligendam, by Bernard Lamy. Lyon: Fratres Deville, 1738. Latin.
The book, written by French theologian and mathematician Bernard Lamy (1640-1715), discusses the history of the Jewish people and Palestine, the history of the scriptures, animals and plants mentioned in the Bible, and more.
The book is illustrated with 11 folded engraved plates – world map, map of Palestine and the vicinity, map of Jerusalem, a detailed plan of the Temple, illustrations of the Temple and its vessels, the High Priest wearing priestly garments, a Jew laying tefillin, a table of the Hebrew-Greek-Latin alphabets and tables of Hebrew measures and weights. At the end of the book, 11 additional engraved plates depicting biblical animals and plants.
[16] ff., 602 pp, [37] ff., 11 folding engraved plates + 11 folding engraved plates (mispagination), 26.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains. Worming throughout the book (slightly affecting text). Tears to edges of some leaves and plates (some reinforced with tape). One plate detached. Erased notation on lower part of title page. Vellum-covered binding, slightly worn and stained. New endpapers.
