The collection includes slides showing pictures of Jewish figures (Moses Montefiore, money changers, portrait of a Jerusalemite Jew), title pages and leaves from books and manuscripts (Passover Haggadahs, Halachic books, Bibles), ancient inscriptions from Palestine (from Herod's temple, the caves of Silwan), artifacts (Elijah's chair, Torah mantles), maps of Palestine and Jerusalem, biblical illustrations, and more.
Most of the slides are captioned (on stickers or in the plate; in English).

The brothers Moshe Davidson and Aryeh Leib Guissine were among the first Jewish photographers in Palestine; they worked in Rishon LeZion ca. 1890-1910 in the studio "Ketav Or", which they established together. The Guissine Brothers documented life in the colony during its early years, the Baron's officials and the residents of the colony, in staged photographs taken in the studio and outside of it.
Among other things, they documented the wine production process at the Rishon LeZion winery in a series of photographs that were offered for sale in Jerusalem and Jaffa.

1. The first houses of Rosh Pinna, photographed from a nearby hill. Seen in the photograph are the synagogue, the administration building and the houses of the settlers.
2. The main street of Zichron Ya'akov. The synagogue appears in the center. Standing on the balcony of the house on the right is Judah Leib Wormser, an official of Baron Rothschild in Zichron Ya'akov.
3. A group of people on the main street of Zichron Ya'akov. On the right: Judah Leib Wormser.
4. Houses in Zichron Ya'akov.
5. The interior of the Ohel Ya'akov synagogue in Zichron Ya'akov (built in 1886).
The photographs are mounted on card and are captioned by hand (in pen; in French) on the mounts. Pen marks on some of the photographs.
The First Aliyah colonies Rosh Pinna and Zichron Ya'akov were founded in 1882 and received the support of the philanthropist Baron Edmund James de Rothschild.
Elie (Eliyahu) Scheid (1841-1922), Baron Rothschild's chief supervisor of colonies in Palestine, managed the affairs of the Jewish Yishuv and the array of clerks who were sent by the Baron to the colonies during the years 1883-1900, from his place of residence in France. Scheid assisted in buying land, encouraged Hebrew-language education in the schools of the colonies and promoted the interests of the Carmel company for marketing wines manufactured in the Baron's wineries. Scheid visited Palestine many times. In one of his letters, he notes that during his trip to Ramat Gilad he used three mules to carry his personal belongings, which included photographic equipment. These photographs were possibly taken by Scheid on one of his journeys.

An album of photographs taken in the course of Isaiah Raffalovich' journey throughout Palestine (from Gedera to Metula) in 1898, accompanied by his friend Eliyahu (Elijah) Meyers, photographer of the American Colony; this was one of the first albums to document 19th-century Jewish settlements in Palestine from a Zionist perspective.
Most of the photographs in the album portray the earliest colonies (moshavot) of the First Aliyah, and are accompanied by descriptive texts, in English and German (on facing columns). Two large photographs on folding plates (of the Moshavot of Zikhron Ya'akov and Rosh Pinna).
[4], 58 leaves (two leaves bound out of order; one leaf bound upside down), 17X25 cm. Good condition. Stains. Creases and some small tears to edges. Two photographs of the Meir Rothchild Hospital in Jerusalem and one photograph depicting the tombstone over the hospital director, Dr. Yitzchak Schwartz's grave. [Jerusalem, ca. late 19th century].
1. Photograph of the hospital façade, by Garabed Krikorian (mounted to an original photographer's mount, captioned "G. Krikorian / Photographe Jerusalem"). Captioned by hand, in French, on the mount.
Garabed Krikorian (1847-1918), born in Izmir, was a Jerusalemite photographer of Armenian origin. He opened his commercial photography studio in Jerusalem in the 1880s.
Photographs 2-3 may have also been taken by Krikorian.

The Meir Rothchild Hospital was established in 1854 in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem as the first Jewish hospital in the city. It was initially run by Dr. Bernhard Newman and consisted of three rooms with 18 beds, a pharmacy, kitchen and library. In 1875, Dr. Yitzchak Schwartz, who immigrated to Palestine about a year earlier, was appointed as the new director of the hospital. With the increase in the city's population and at the initiative of Dr. Schwartz, it was decided to move the hospital outside the walls of the Old City. The new building, on HaNevi'im St., was planned by the Jerusalemite architect Alexei Franghia and was dedicated in 1888 in the presence of local rabbis and dignitaries.

Photographic panorama of Jerusalem, folded and hard-bound (with gilt lettering) – souvenir from the inauguration ceremony of the Abbey of the Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem which took place on April 10, 1910. Printed beneath the panorama is a key of the 177 sites marked on the panorama with numbers. Text on the following page, recounting Christian traditions related to the site on which the Dormition Abbey was established and the describing the acquisition of the land and the building of the Abbey (noting that the land was bought by Emperor Wilhelm II in late October 1898, during his visit to Palestine).

Photographic panorama of Jerusalem, folded and hard-bound (with gilt lettering) – souvenir from the inauguration ceremony of the Abbey of the Dormition on Mount Zion in Jerusalem which took place on April 10, 1910. Printed beneath the panorama is a key of the 177 sites marked on the panorama with numbers. Text on the following page, recounting Christian traditions related to the site on which the Dormition Abbey was established and the describing the acquisition of the land and the building of the Abbey (noting that the land was bought by Emperor Wilhelm II in late October 1898, during his visit to Palestine).
Color picture plate mounted to cover, depicting the Abbey of the Dormition; with gilt-impressed title and two verses from Psalms.
Panorama: 21.5X229.5 cm. Good condition. Some stains. Minor wear to binding.

Hebrew and English table of contents, listing photograph subjects: Persian Jew, Yemenite Jew, Sephardic children, Jew from Buchara at the wailing wall, Persian Jewess, Jewish girl from Kurdistan, Beduin girl, Arab woman, Arab minstrel, fellah, Greek priest, Yemenite Jew.

The mounts are marked (some by paper label and some by stamp) "Photo Barak". Hebrew and English table of contents, on photographic paper, listing photograph subjects: Haifa, view from mt. Carmel; Emek Yesreel; Nathania, the beach; Tel Aviv, view from Jaffa; Tel Aviv, the great synagogue; Beer Tuvia; the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv-road; Jerusalem, the amphitheater; Jerusalem, view from Mt. Scopus; Jerusalem, the Jewish Agency; the Dead Sea; the Arnon River.

Arthur Bauer (1903-1968?) was born in Salzburg. A pianist, conductor and watchmaker by profession. Immigrated to Palestine in 1933. After a period, he took up photography and established a photo studio named "Photo Barak", publishing a number of photo series depicting the views and inhabitants of Palestine. His photographs were characterized by straightforwardness and strong contrast. Bauer a pioneer of color photo development in Palestine.
