Views from Palestine and its Jewish Colonies, by I. [Isaiah] Raffalovich and M.E. [Moshe Eliyahu] Sachs. [Frankfurt, 1899]. English and German.
An album of photographs taken in the course of Isaiah Raffalovich' journey throughout Palestine (from Gedera to Metula) in 1898, accompanied by his friend Eliyahu (Elijah) Meyers, photographer of the American Colony; this was one of the first albums to document 19th-century Jewish settlements in Palestine from a Zionist perspective.
Most of the photographs in the album portray the earliest colonies (moshavot) of the First Aliyah, and are accompanied by descriptive texts, in English and German (on facing columns). Two large photographs on folding plates (of the Moshavot of Zikhron Ya'akov and Rosh Pinna).
[4], 58 leaves (two leaves bound out of order; one leaf bound upside down), 17X25 cm. Good condition. Stains. Creases and some small tears to edges. Open tears to edges of title page and front endpaper, restored (with paper). Original binding, slightly worn, with minor blemishes to edges and spine. Adhesive tape to inside binding.
