Tzedakah KaMishpat, on the distribution of charity to residents of Eretz Israel, by R. Aharon Leib Neuman. Jerusalem: printer not indicated, [1893; 1888 according to Sh. Halevy].

The book addresses the proper distribution of charity (Halukka) and sharply criticizes the distribution practices of kollels in Jerusalem, particularly the Hungarian Kollel, and calls for people of Eretz Israel and prospective immigrants to make do with less and renounce luxuries.

The author,
R. Aharon Leib Neuman (ca. 1845-1905), son of R. Aharon Anshel Neuman, Rabbi of Vac. R. Aharon Leib immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1863. He was of weak constitution and lived in harsh poverty, but was known as a diligent learner; his calls for justice and economizing are recognizably genuine.

[1], 16 leaves. 18 cm. Dry paper. Overall good condition. Stains. Minute open tear on title page, not affecting text. New binding.

Sh. Halevy, No. 628.

A particularly rare book (recorded in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book based on a copy of Mossad HaRav Kook; the NLI catalog contains a partial copy lacking the title page and last leaf).

Chesed VeEmet, "a society of laborers, for the glory of work and labor in the Upper Galilee, here in Safed". Jerusalem: R. Y. D. Frumkin, [1893]. Hebrew and Yiddish, on facing pages.

Details the aims, statutes and regulations of the society, a list of members, and letters of various rabbis and public figures in several languages.

[2], 38 pages. 17.5 cm. Dry paper. Good-fair condition. Stains. Tears, including minor tears repaired with paper filling to title page, without loss, and open tear to last leaf, repaired with paper filling. Light worming. Close trimming, affecting text on last leaf. New binding.

This booklet is documented in the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book (listing 000161103). However, based on the given title and number of leaves, the record appears to have been made based on the abbreviated second title page, without the complete Hebrew title page, which appears in the present volume. In addition, the Bibliography of the Hebrew book records only 36 pages, while the present copy has 38. The copy appearing in the NLI also lacks these two leaves.
