Lot 570 Seven Books on Karaite Judaism and the Crimean Peninsula – 1860-1920 – Ephraim Deinard

Online Auction 018 – Jewish and Israeli History, Art and Culture January 23, 2019
Opening: $200
Unsold
Seven books on Karaite Judaism and the Crimean Peninsula (some of them bound together). Warsaw, Vienna, and Vilna. 1860-1920.
1. Writings about the Ancient History of the Karaites and Their Literature according to Hebrew and Arabic Manuscripts, by Simcha Pinsker. Vienna: Adalbert della Torre, 1860.
An interesting study of Karaite Judaism by the scholar Simcha Pinsker, who describes the history, development, and writings of the Karaites. He claims that the source of the name Karaite was from the Hebrew word kara, meaning "to call" or "to invite," and came from their call to reject belief in the Oral Torah and believe in the Written Torah only. Among other things, he writes about Karaite literature and poetry, and claims that Karaite poetry was a model for the medieval Jewish poets such as Solomon ibn Gabirol and Judah Halevi.
2. A Critique of the History of the Karaites, by Avraham Ber Gottlober. Vilna: R. Shmuel Yosef Finn, 1865.
3-6. Four books bound in one volume, from the first books of the author and historian Ephraim Deinard, about the Crimean Peninsula, the Karaite Jews and the Krymchaks, and the Crimean War.
• A Journey in the Crimean Peninsula. Warsaw: Alexander Ginz, 1879-1880. Volumes 1 and 2. • A Crimean Journey. Warsaw: Yitzhak Goldman, 1878. • The Crimean War. Warsaw: Alexander Ginz, 1879.
7. A Memorial of the Righteous, or a Brief Legend, by Mordechai ben Yosef Sultanski, with a foreword by Samuel Abraham Poznański. Warsaw: HaTzefira, 1920.
