Woven tapestry depicting three female figures, with the inscription "Rahel Imenu" (Rachel Our Mother). [Produced by the Torah Umelakha school, established by the Alliance Israélite Universelle (?), Palestine, late 19th or early 20th century].
Small, square, machine-woven tapestry. The central panel depicts a young dancing woman, and next to her, two other women, drumming. A typical Ottoman, mosque-like building appears in the background. The inscription at the bottom reads "Rahel Imenu" (Rachel Our Mother).
Machine-made tapestries created by the Torah Umelakha school made use of neutral images commonly found in the applied arts, but the tapestries were turned into Holy Land souvenirs with the addition of "Judaizing" inscriptions. At times, as in the case of the present tapestries, there was no true connection between the actual imagery and the inscription.
40X43.5 cm (not including fringes). Good condition. Minor stains. Blemishes to fringes.
Reference: Gideon Ofrat, "The First Beginning: ‘Torah Umelakha.'" Hebrew.
