An advertising booklet issued by the "Ahawah" Children's and Youth's Home in Haifa. Tel-Aviv: Melnik-Propaganda, [ca. mid-late 1930s]. German and some Hebrew.
The booklet contains a long informational text accompanied by ten pictures: the playroom, a visit to the cowshed, plowing the field, the dining room, the kitchen, and more. Some of the pictures were taken by Tim Gidal and Lou Landuaer.
The "Ahawah" institution was founded in Berlin after the end of World War I as a home for child refugees from Eastern Europe, and later was turned into an orphanage for German-Jewish children. In 1922, nurse Beate Berger was appointed director of the institution; she changed its name to "Ahawah" and after the Nazis' rise to power, decided to move it to Palestine. A new building was built on the outskirts of Haifa with the assistance of the JNF and visas were obtained for the children of the institution with the assistance of Henrietta Szold. During the 1960s, the orphanage started working with the Youth Aliyah and today it operates under the name of "The Ahawah Children's and Youth's Village".
[4] leaves, approx. 18.5 cm. Good condition. Horizontal fold line. Stains and minor blemishes.
The booklet is not in NLI. One copy only in OCLC.

"Announcement to all residents of the State of Israel" (Hebrew), the first poster to be issued by the provisional government of the State of Israel after the Declaration of Independence. Tel-Aviv: "HaPoel Hatzair" Cooperative Press, 14.5.1948.
The poster, printed in the Israeli national colors of blue and white, bears a first message by the new government to its citizens: "In this time of ultimate struggle, during the malicious attack of the enemy, the provisional government has taken power in Israel. Our state embodies the best vision of generations. We are commanded to protect the realization of this vision with full force" (Hebrew).
This is followed by text meant to steel the citizens for the war and the price they are about to pay: "Without sacrifices of blood and tears, without sacrificing body and mind, without the toil and pain of us all, we will not achieve victory. The Yishuv is called in its thousands to weapons. The joy of these great days is accompanied by grief for the fallen in the battles in the fields of the homeland. Their sacrifice will be accepted. Honor to our heroes" (Hebrew).
Towards the end, three lines in thinner characters urge the citizens to uphold the rights of Palestinian Arabs: "We shall remember: within the borders of our country, citizens of the Arab people will continue to live – and many of them are tired of this war. Their rights, equal civil rights, we are commanded to protect. We come in peace. Our hands are outstretched to them to build the country with us" (Hebrew).
Approx. 92.5X60 cm. Fair condition. Fold lines, creases and stains. Filing holes and pinholes. Small tears to edges and fold lines. Several long tears to margins, one reinforced with tape. Notation to verso.

An official broadside with a declaration of the Israeli government for the first Independence Day. [Tel-Aviv, 5 Iyar (May 4) 1949].
The declaration begins with detailing the State of Israel’s achievements in its first year of existence: military victory, the establishment of the IDF, the establishment of the government, global recognition and absorbing immigration. It then establishes that Independence Day would be an official holiday in Israel – a day for celebration and rest as well as a day of remembrance of those who died in their country’s defense.
The emblem of the State of Israel is printed on top.
46.5X76.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Filing holes. A few stains to margins. Fold lines and creases. Several minute tears. Notations on verso. Trimmed margins. The bottom part of the broadside, with the location and date: "HaKirya, the 5th of Iyar 5709" is missing. A printed piece of paper, with the words "The Israeli Government" (Hebrew) is glued to lower center (this piece was cut from the original bottom part of the poster, missing from this copy). A large toy locomotive made of sheet metal by the Shay toy company, for the festivals of the tenth anniversary of the State of Israel. [Israel, 1958].
A large, colorful toy locomotive, decorated with the emblems of the Twelve Tribes, flags of Israel, Stars of David and olive branches. The roof reads "Special to the 10th anniversary festivals" in English and Hebrew. The manufacturer's name, "Shay", in English and Hebrew appears on the backside.
The tenth anniversary of the State of Israel was marked by a series of events, ceremonies and festivals. During that year, the Tenth Anniversary Exhibition celebrating the achievements of the young state was held at "Binyanei Haumah", the International Bible Contest was held for the first time, and more.

Printed sheet metal. Approx. 8X10X50 cm. Fair-good condition. Rust and blemishes to paint. Bends. Custom display Acrylic Glass case; nailed to a wooden base.
