Two small Hanukkah lamps. Rissani / Demnat (Demnate), Morocco, [19th century].
Brass, cast / cast and punched.
Both lamps with back plate in openwork, with slender tendrils, surmounted by trifoliate clover-like ornament. In both, row of oil fonts consists of four square pans, each with two pinched, pointed spouts for wicks (i.e., two lights per pan). In the opinion of Mordechai Narkiss, the archetype for this design of Hanukkah lamp hails back to 15th-century Sicily.
1. Product of early sand casting. Probable origin: Demnat (Demnate). Height: 15 cm. Width: 13 cm. Good condition.
2. Punched with circlet patterns. Probable origin: Rissani. Height: 12.5 cm. Width: 13 cm. No servant light. Good condition. Fractures.
