Two necklaces with Islamic amulet cases inscribed with the word "Mashallah" (Arabic: مشألة) , praising the Lord and warding off the Evil Eye (literal translation: "What the Lord has willed") / Case with paper amulet. Syria, [late 19th or early 20th century].
Low-grade silver (parcel gilt), repoussé and engraved; silver thread; niello; glass beads.
1. Chain composed of flower-shaped links, with each link consisting of four small rings, and with three hollow triangular ornaments attached. Central triangular ornament inscribed with Arabic word "Mashallah." Small pendants. 58X20 cm.
2. Chain with large, hollow triangular pendant, inlaid with stones or beads. Pendants, some fish-shaped, suspended from bottom. Approx. 48X12. No cover.
3. Chain with cylindrical amulet case, decorated with vegetal pattern in niello. Five silver coins suspended from amulet. Original amulet – a paper sheet with excerpts from the Qur'an – enclosed. 30X8 cm.
