Torah Or, Chassidic essays on Bereshit and Shemot, Chanukah and Purim, by Rebbe Shneur Zalman of Liadi – the Baal HaTanya. Kopust (Kopys), 1836. First edition. Two title pages.
The book was written from teachings heard directly from the Baal HaTanya by his brother R. Yehuda Leib of Janowiec, author of She'erit Yehuda, and was arranged and edited for print by his disciple and grandson Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch.
Ownership inscription dated 1872, and glosses by the same writer on final page of the Book of Bereshit. Lengthy glosses in several places – copyings of various segulot, written in Urmia (present day: west Azerbaijan, Iran) in 1872. Other brief glosses in Oriental script. Signature and stamp of R. Shlomo Zalman Moses, prominent Agudah activist, secretary of Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel.
[2], 2-167 leaves. Lacking final leaf of errata. Title pages printed in red and black. 21.5 cm. Condition varies. Most leaves in good condition, with some stains. First eight leaves in fair condition. Dark dampstains to first leaves, with minor mold stains. Large tears to title pages, slightly affecting text of second title page, repaired with paper. Inscriptions. New leather binding.
