Torah mantle. Morocco, [early 20th century]. Velvet, golden embroidery, wood. Mantle consists of a cape with a stiff rectangular cover with two openings for Atzei Chayim. Mantle is made of purple velvet with golden fringes at the edges. Floral embroidery, dense at the edges and sparse towards the center. A dedication on the reverse, within an embroidered frame, surrounded by an embroidered vegetal pattern: “….David Abécassis…in memory of his wife…”. A purple thread is laced on the upper part – this thread was intended for hanging the mantle on the wall or from the ceiling for good luck on special life-cycle occasions such as Brith Milah or other ceremonies.
