Ruach Chaim, commentary on Tractate Avot, by R. Chaim of Volozhin. Vilna, 1858. First edition.
Two title pages. Printed wrappers (the back wrapper was mistakenly bound at the front of the book).
The Ruach Chaim commentary was printed around the text of the Mishnah. The commentary includes glosses by R. Yitzchak of Volozhin, son of the author.
A letter by R. Avraham Simcha of Omtchislav, disciple and nephew of R. Chaim of Volozhin, and a letter by R. Eliyahu Shlomo Zalman, son of R. Yitzchak of Volozhin, were printed on leaf [3]. These are followed by approbations by R. Yisrael of Salant and R. Yitzchak Avigdor Rabbi of Kovno.
Includes the Maayanei Yehoshua commentary (printed at the beginning of the book), and Mitzpeh Yehoshua – sources (printed beneath the text of the Mishnah), by R. Yehoshua Heshel HaLevi Levin, son-in-law of the grandson of the author.
Stamps of R. Shemaryahu Yosef Klepfish of Warsaw (brother of the head of the Warsaw Beit Din, and father-in-law of R. Chaim Yaakov Naftali Silberberg) and of R. Nechemya Yosef Denenburg of Jerusalem.
[5], 4-17, 41 leaves. 21 cm. Good condition. Stains. Dark stains on front wrapper. Tears and minor damage. Open tear to front wrapper, repaired. New binding.
