Letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Aryeh Leib HaCohen Popko "son of the Chafetz Chaim", to Rabbi Yoel Leib Herzog. Warsaw, 1931.
Letter of thanks for caring for and finding employment for a slaughterer and bodek.
Rabbi Aryeh Leib Cohen Popko (1861-1939), an outstanding genius, beloved son and right-hand of the Chafetz Chaim, disciple of his father and disciple of the author of "Beit HaLevi" and Lithuanian Torah giants. A leading scholar of his generation, his father prevented him from taking a rabbinic position. He participated in the writing of the "Mishna Berura" and wrote complete simanim.
The recipient, Rabbi Yoel Leib HaLevi Herzog (1865-1935), served at that time as head of the Beit Din in Paris. Father and teacher of the Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog. Rabbi Yoel used to erase the title HaGaon from letters he received, and in this letter as well the letter is torn in place of this word.
