Jewish figures in Turkey, two etchings, [France, 17th century].
1. Medecin Juif [Jewish doctor], portrait of Moses Hamon, doctor of Sultan Suleiman I.
Leaf: 21.5X33.5 cm. Good condition. Stains. Two slight tears at upper margins of leaf. A paper strip is pasted along the right margins of the leaf (on the reverse). Small hole at upper left corner of etching.
2. Merchant Juif [Jewish merchant], etching depicting a Jewish merchant in a costume typical of Turkish Jews.
Leaf: 22X33.5 cm. Good condition. Stains. Tear at right margins of leaf and an open tear at upper right corner. Small hole at upper left corner of leaf. Remnants of pasted paper at right margins of leaf (on the reverse).
Both etchings appeared originally in the book of the French geographer Nicolas de Nicolay (1517-1583), "Les Quatre Premiers Livres Des Navigations… Orientales" (Lyon, 1568). These two etchings are, most probably, out of the book "L'Histoire de la décadence de l'Empire grec et établissement de celuy des Turcs" (Paris, 1662).
