Jewish figures in Turkey, three engravings from the book "Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant" [collection of one hundred prints depicting different nations in the Levant]. [Paris, 1714].
The three engravings were created after works by the Flemmish-French painter Jean Baptiste van Mour (1671-1737).
1. Femme Juive, Courtiere qui porte ses Marchandises aux Jeunes Dames Turques qui ne peuvent Sortir, an engraving by Philippe Simonneau. Plate no. 65.
An engraving depicting a Jewish woman - a merchant who carries goods to the wives of the Turkish Sultan (when women in the Sultan's harem were not allowed to leave the harem while Jewish women were allowed to enter the harem and serve as go-between the Sultan wives and the world outside the harem).
Plate: 25X36 cm, leaf: 33.5X50.5 cm. Good condition. Some stains. Slightly darkened margins. Creases and tears at left margins of the leaf.
