Illustrated vellum leaf, Haftarah for Parshat Shemot. [Baghdad, 19th century].
Oriental square scribal script, framed by ornamental floral patterns. Written on the margins: "In honor of the young man Abdullah Shei[kh] David Shei[kh] the dear lofty man Sassoon Tzalach David".
On the verso is a stamp with the emblem of the Sassoon family. The leaf is bound in a binding, with the bookplate of David Saliman Sassoon, with the family emblem.
Abdullah (Albert) Sassoon (1818-1897), Jewish manufacturer, businessman and philanthropist who was granted British nobility titles. Son of David Sassoon (the I) and his primary heir who managed the assets of the Sassoon family - the "Rothschilds of the East " - in India and in England.
Vellum leaf. Approx. 11X15 cm. Good-fair condition. Restored tears, slightly affecting the frame edges.
