Le Bordereau, Etude des Depositions de M. Bertillon et du Capitaine Valerio au Conseil de Guerre de Rennes, Par un Ancien Eleve De L'ecole Polytechnique [the incriminating document (Bordereau), investigation of the depositions by Bertillon and Captain Valerio before a martial court in Rennes, by a former student of "Le'ecole Polytechnique"]. Paris: Hardy& Bernard, 1904. French. Plates volume.
Booklet of plates, published originally with an essay about the "Bordereau" which Dreyfus was accused of writing, (the "Bordereau", a document which included secret military information, sent to the German embassy in Paris, constituted the start of the Dreyfus affair). The booklet includes photos of Dreyfus' handwriting, drawings for graphology analysis, and more, based on testimonies in the Dreyfus trial, and the testimony by Alphonse Bertillon in particular. Bertillon, a French police officer, of the founders of biometric identification, was summoned to testify as an expert, and despite the fact that he was not an expert in analyzing handwriting, he claimed that Dreyfus was guilty of writing the document. [23] leaves, 38 cm.
Enclosed: leaves with a facsimile of a manuscript (French) - most probably the draft of the composition which accompanied the presented plates (20 leaves) as well as six photos of a manuscript for identification of the writer of the Bordereau. Size and condition varies.
