Modern-style Hanukkah lamp, consisting of nine long, thin, cylindrical metal rods, oriented at different angles and meeting at bottom.
Kurt Pfefferman (1919-2016) was born in Berlin, Germany, and immigrated to Palestine in 1939. Studied at the New Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem. Taught craftsmanship and art at the Hebrew Re'ali School in Haifa, where he resided. Designed jewelry and objects of Judaica. Participated in international design competitions, winning a number of notable prizes.
Height: 33 cm. Maximum width: 22 cm.

Hanukkah lamp with Emblem of the Etzel. [Palestine, ca. 1940s].
Brass, cast, pierced and turned; bullet cartridges.
A unique model of Hanukkah lamp, entirely handmade.
Wide horizontal base, supporting, in the middle, the emblem of the Irgun – an outstretched arm grasping a rifle, with the map of the Greater Land of Israel, the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, and a pair of olive branches in the background, alongside the Hebrew inscription "Rak Kakh" ("only thus"), the motto of the organization. The emblem is flanked by a pair of large bullet cartridges which are surmounted by an elongated rectangular, removable brass bar into which the eight candleholders and the servant light are screwed.
Height: 16 cm. Maximum width: 18 cm.

Brass, cast.
Back plate in form of pointed arch, with Hebrew inscription "These candles are sacred" and the figure of a "halutz" (Jewish pioneer) grasping a pick-axe. Star of David engraved at center of base, and underneath it, the (Hebrew) caption "Halutz Ivri": "Hebrew [i.e., Jewish] Pioneer."
Hanukkah lamps of similar design were cast by the Pal-Bell Company.
Height: 16.5 cm. Width: 16 cm. Good condition. Some corrosion.

Back plate with medallion at center, depicting Jews worshiping at the Western Wall. Inscribed (Hebrew) "The Western Wall." Medallion encircled by symmetrical decorative elements, specifically a pair of palm trees and a pair of kneeling camels. Hebrew inscription "Israel" appears at bottom center of back plate. Row of oil fonts takes form of oil pan with removable lid, perforated with eight small holes for wicks. Servant light surmounts back plate. Front legs of lamp shaped as crouching lions.
Height: 14 cm. Width: 15 cm. Good condition.

Brass, cast; applied verdigris patina.
Rectangular back plate, with relief depicting a group of Jewish refugees on the road, carrying their belongings. Underneath the image is the Hebrew inscription "She'erit HaPletah" (the surviving remnants, i.e. Holocaust survivors). Row of candleholders in front; servant light positioned to the side of the relief. Suspension ring.
Arnold (Aharon) Zadikow (1884-1943). Jewish-German sculptor and medalist, studied at the School of Applied Arts in Munich, Germany. Active in France, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. In 1942, deported with his family to Theresienstadt concentration camp, where he died.
The scene depicted in this relief also appears on a cast plaque entitled (Hebrew) "... who delivered you from the Land of Egypt" (from Numbers 15:41; see Kedem Catalogue No. 7, item no. 562).

Back plate in form of a house, with an allegorical relief depicting the birth of the State of Israel. Three figures are portrayed inside the house, namely a father, mother, and son. The father is shown seated on the floor, holding a large book and mourning the destruction of the Temple. He is approached by both the mother, holding an oil lamp in her hand, and the son, who holds up the emblem of the State of Israel – the Menorah flanked by olive branches. Row of candleholders in front; servant light positioned on top of the house's chimney.

Tall, erect Hanukkah lamp, with plaque in form of shield at center, supported on elevated platform flanked by crouching lions. Shield bears depiction of Judah the Maccabee wielding a javelin, under a Paleo-Hebrew inscription.
This Hanukkah lamp represents a small Israeli version of the sculpture / menorah originally created by the artist Fred Kormis in London in 1950 (see website of the Jewish Museum, New York, item no. JM 22-50).
The artist and sculptor and esteemed medalist Frederick (Fred; Fritz) J. Kormis (1897-1986) fled his native Frankfurt in the early 1930s to escape the Nazis, eventually settling in London.

Upright Hanukkah lamp. When viewed from the front, the five figures, labeled "The Five Maccabean Brothers" (Hebrew), namely the five sons of Mattathias the Hasmonean, conceal most of the candleholders arranged behind them. The servant light is positioned below in the center, attached to the front of the main shaft of the lamp. Inscribed (Hebrew) horizontally on circular base: "Greek [soldiers] did gather [to wage war] against me" (from the liturgical poem Ma'oz Tzur).
This Hanukkah lamp is based on a particularly large model (today housed in the museum of the Spertus Institute in Chicago), originally created in the early 20th century by sculptor Benno Elkan.

Large Hanukkah lamp featuring nine figures representing the Maccabees – with each figure holding a shield and javelin and with the top of each javelin serving as a candleholder (including the one positioned front and center, serving as the servant light). Behind the servant light, surmounting a shaft, is a circled Star of David.
Unique Hanukkah lamps like this one were produced in limited quantities by the teachers and students of the network of polytechnical schools known as ORT (Organization for Rehabilitation through Training) in the 1950s and 1960s. They were presented as gifts to donors, heads of state, and mayors. The inspiration for the images of the Maccabees was derived from the work of the artist Hans Teppich.
Height: 18 cm. Width: 45 cm. Good condition. Minor staining and rust.

At center is the figure of Mattathias the Hasmonean, modeled after a sculpture by Boris Schatz. Row of square oil fonts in front. Servant light positioned to side of back plate.
The whereabouts of the original statue entitled "Mattathias the Hasmonean," sculpted by Boris Schatz in Paris in 1894 – wherein Mattathias is portrayed wielding a sword and standing over the body of a slain Seleucid soldier – are unknown today.

The two figures are supported on a wooden base, inscribed (in brass) with the Hebrew words (appearing in a number of Jewish prayers associated with Hanukkah) "in those days at that time."

Two Hanukkah lamps wherein the main shaft takes the form of a helmeted soldier in uniform, bearing a rifle. In both lamps, the soldier is portrayed holding up, in his left hand, a flag of Israel with the Hebrew word for "Hanukkah" substituted for the Star of David. Surmounting the horizontal banner is the row of candleholders. One lamp with the servant light positioned on top of a Star of David which surmounts the flagpole; the second lamp with the servant lights positioned in front, atop the right end of the base.
Height: 15 cm. Width: 17.5 cm. Good condition.
