Collection of original drawings and sketches for the illustrations and cover of the book "Four Billy Goats", by Uriel Kahana. [Warsaw, 1922]. Black ink, red ink and pencil on paper.
1-24. Twenty four drawings and sketches for illustrations for the book "Four Billy Goats".
Most illustrations are final, as they appeared in print, but alongside are some alternative illustrations which were eventually not printed. Enclosed are two cut illustrations (not completed).
Size varies. Good overall condition. Some creases at margins. Pasting marks to some. Holes, inscriptions and markings in pencil, from preparations for print.
25-27. Three sketches for the cover of the book "Four Billy Goats".
The sketches for the cover present three design stages: the first sketch portrays elements which were omitted from the final version (for example: the digit "4", position of the title, and a square with four circles which was finally substituted by four dots and four lines); on the back appears a pencil sketch for an illustration of a wolf; the second, a sketch for the final version of the cover, in black only - parts supposed to be printed in red appear in pencil; the third - final sketch, in black and red, includes comments for the printer (which parts have to be printed in red).
One 17X18 cm sketch, good condition. Tears at margins. Brown-yellowish paper. Two sketches on sheets of approx. 25X30 cm. Good condition. Folding marks. Creases and tears at margins. One of them on brown-yellowish paper.
28-34. Seven early sketches for illustrations for the book "Four Billy Goats".
Early pencil sketches of the goats, the wolf and the urban scene. A number of sketches are two-sided.
Approx. 25X18 cm. Good condition. Creases and tears at margins. Some stains. Brown-yellowish paper.
