Manuscript leaf, prayer for the Jewish child "Gad Yosef son of Miriam" – known by his Italian name Edgardo Mortara, who was kidnapped by the Church in his youth and was the central figure in a worldwide affair. [Rome?, ca. 1858].

Sephardic-Italian script. The prayer begins with a request for mercy, and for the Pope and the authorities to return the Jewish child Gad Yosef son of Miriam, and goes on to describe the child's ill fate far from his family and friends, and the concern for his departure from the Torah. The prayer further asks that every Jewish man and woman merit to educate their children according to the Torah way, and for G-d's kingship over the world to manifest.

Gad Yosef (Edgardo) HaLevi Mortara was born to a Jewish family in Bologna and was kidnapped at the age of six by Catholic authorities based on the claim of the family's Christian servant that she had baptized him secretly. Church law at the time considered a Jewish child who was baptized to be Christian and forbade him to live with his Jewish family.
The kidnapping aroused international protest on the part of world leaders including Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary, Emperor Napoleon III of France and Sir Moses Montefiore, who all failed to sway Pope Pius IX, and Edgardo became a Christian priest and missionary. Edgardo's kidnapping became a cause célèbre and led to the founding of organizations such as the Alliance Israélite Universelle which fought for the rights of the Jewish community in Europe, and is detailed in David Kertzer's 1997 book 'The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara' and Steven Spielberg's 2023 movie 'Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara'.
The present prayer, apparently authored in a Jewish community in Italy, was heretofore unknown. R. Yaakov Yosef Fasano of Rome documents a public prayer held in Rome with a similar name and text to the present document (with expansions and other changes). R. Fasano's handwriting is similar to that appearing in the present manuscript, and he may have been the writer.

Illustrated title page, with illustration of crown, leaves, flowers and decorative ribbon. Square script and Italian semi-cursive script. All pages (except title page) decorated with red frame.
Written by "Shlomo Moshe Shabtai Nissim MeAdumim" of Ancona. His portrait, with his handwritten dedication, is extant in the Schwadron collection of the NLI.

Printed brochure – program for "delegates and attendees of the Great Congress". Published by the "Bureau for the first Great Congress of Agudat Yisrael". Vienna: Halpern and partners, Elul 1923.

Distributed to delegates of the Great Congress, with instructions and a program, detailing how the gatherings would be conducted, seating in the auditoriums, meetings of committees and regulations for voting in the committees.
The first international "Great Congress" of Agudat Yisrael took place in Vienna in 1923, and was attended by rabbis and delegates from all over the world, including the Chafetz Chaim, Rebbe Avraham Mordechai Alter of Ger, R. Chaim Ozer Grodzinski of Vilna, Rebbe Yisrael Friedman of Chortkov, and other rebbes and Torah leaders from Poland, Lithuania, Germany and worldwide. The opening address was delivered by the Chafetz Chaim. Another speaker was the young R. Meir Shapiro of Lublin, who, with the encouragement of the Chafetz Chaim, made the historical proposal of the Daf Yomi study program.
On margins of title page, inscriptions in German. Stamp of the "Archive of Charedi Judaism" [an archive founded in the 1960s in order to document the history of Agudat Yisrael and Orthodox Judaism].

Orot HaMitzvot, commentaries and novellae on the reasons for commandments, according to the order of the Torah portions, with Emek Binyamin – responsa, halachic rulings and laws by R. Binyamin Dias-Brandon (a rabbi of the Portuguese community of Amsterdam). Amsterdam: Jan Janson, [1753]. First editions of both works.

Divisional title page for Emek Binyamin (which was also printed separately). At the beginning of Orot HaMitzvot are many approbations and poems in praise of the author and his book, by rabbis of Amsterdam and Hamburg.
Emek Binyamin sections 15-16 contain a halachic correspondence regarding inheritance between the author and R. Aharon Ledesma of Suriname (South America; his location is mentioned in the contents on the last page). This is the first place in responsa literature where a European rabbi addresses an American rabbi.

Bilingual placard in English and Yiddish, featuring a facsimile of the original letter (in English) from George Washington, first president of the United States of America, addressed to the Jewish community of Newport, Rhode Island, along with the translation of this letter into Yiddish. The text is printed over the background of an outline portrait of George Washington in bright yellow.
Washington’s letter was sent to Newport’s Jewish community following the president’s visit there in 1790. This was at the time when the Constitution of the United States of America was being ratified in Long Island, New York. In this letter, Washington reaffirms the centrality of the principles of religious freedom and tolerance, and delivers a greeting to members of the local Jewish community which borrows a biblical verse, from the Prophet Micah (4: 4): "May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while ‘every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig-tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid’ [sic]."
Newport’s Touro Synagogue is the oldest Jewish house of worship in North America. A public reading of George Washington’s letter takes place every year in this synagogue.

57.5X41 cm. Fair-good condition. Dry, brittle paper, with browning. Tears, some reinforced with old, acidic adhesive tape. Matted, mounted with old strips of adhesive tape, and framed.

Kiddush cup. Italy, presumably Ancona; dedicatory inscription dated 1803.

Silver, stamped and engraved (unmarked); parcel gilt.

Kiddush cup in form of a trimmed cone, supported by a tall, fancy shaft with a vegetal pattern on top of a round, elevated base. Engraved dedicatory inscription (Hebrew) along rim of base: "Made under the sponsorship of the dear and wonderful Moshe Yitzhak Pesaro and Yisrael Cohen-Belinfante … in the year 5563 [1803]." Gilt surface.

The Pesaros are a Jewish family originating from the Le Marche region of Italy; descendants resided in Ferrara, Ancona, and Venice, among other places. The Cohen-Bellinfantes are a Sephardi Jewish family of Portuguese origin. Among the patriarchs of the Cohen-Bellinfante family was Yosef Cohen-Bellinfante, who left Portugal in 1526 and settled in the Balkans; descendants are known to have lived in the Netherlands, among other countries, and some of them gained fame as poets, authors, educators, and rabbis.

Height: 16.5 cm. Diameter at base: 7 cm. Good condition. All parts of cup soldered together.

Carved olivewood, lined with fabric; print on paper.

Octagonal wooden box bearing depictions of holy sites, with handwritten Hebrew labels: "The Western Wall", "Tomb of Our Mother Rachel", "Cave of the Patriarchs". Quotes from the Bible and greetings for the Sukkot holiday are inscribed on the lid in black ink.
A printed note is glued to the inner surface of the lid. It bears the following dedicatory inscription (Hebrew): "A ‘mishlo’ach manot’ [in context, ‘gift’] to the Magnate [indecipherable] / Yitzhak Yehuda Hartstein, may his light illuminate / from the Sephardi Congregation / Here, Debrecen, may the Lord protect it."

Amulet for the protection of the home, customarily distributed by R. Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir ("R' Yeshayale Kerestirer"), the "Yismach Moshe" and other Rebbes. [Europe, ca. 1910s-1930s].

Photolithographic print on thick paper, with Stam script in two lines: "ילשת באשר בוליב / והאפה הבמוג ולה". On verso, handwritten inscriptions in German: "Rabbiner" (written twice).
The identity of the amulet's printer and the righteous rabbi who gave it for protection remain unclear. This print appears to be an old, high-quality lithograph or zincograph from the early 20th century (approximately 1910s-1920s, possibly 1930s).
The book "Mofet HaDor" about the famous Rabbi Yeshayah of Kerestir relates that most amulets he gave followed this formula. It tells of a Jewish shop that was miraculously saved from arson by a gentile competitor after receiving such amulets from R. Yeshaya of Kerestir. Two photographs of these amulets appear there.

Rabbi Yeshayale of Kerestir passed away on 3 Iyar 5685 (1925), and such amulets may have been printed during his lifetime, as demand increased.
This amulet, containing three protective verses, is decoded in the book "Elef Ktav" (R. Yitzchak Weiss of Vrbové, entry 515): the first line alternates initials from the verses "May there be peace within your walls, serenity within your palaces" (Psalms 122:7) and "No evil will befall you, nor will any plague come near your tent" (Psalms 91:10), while the second line contains initials from the verse "And they smote the men who were at the entrance of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the entrance" (Genesis 19:11).
This amulet formula was given by Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum, author of "Yismach Moshe", for protecting homes from thieves and harmful forces.
The journal "Nachalat Zvi" (16, pp. 126-127) shows a photograph of a similar amulet written by the "Yismach Moshe" and given by his grandson, the "Yitav Lev", to his attendant – Rabbi Meir Schwartz. It relates that when the Satmar Rebbe, author of "Divrei Yoel", visited Eretz Israel, he made a special trip to see this amulet and examined it with interest.
Similar amulets were later given by the Admorim of Sanz, Belz, Ruzhin, Sighet and Liska. Additionally, Rabbi Hillel of Kolomyia, in his "Teshuvot Beit Hillel HaChadash" (section 32), recommends writing this amulet and "placing it at all entrances of a new house for some time, and no harm will come to him or any members of his household".

Printed amulet depicting an encounter between Elijah and Lilith. At the top is a depiction of a circumcision. On the left and right margins are the figures of Adam (right) and Eve (left), each standing on a balcony with a canopy. The text under the Hebrew title "For a male child" is in German, written in Hebrew letters (Tzenah URenah script). Printed at the bottom is the inscription "Brit Kodesh" ("Holy Covenant").

Length: approx. 19 cm, width: approx. 22 cm. Fair condition. Many stains. Tears, including small open tears, affecting text and illustrations. Folding marks. Creases and folds to margins.

A corresponding leaf for a newborn girl was printed concurrently.

Large plaque depicting some 50 cities, sites, monuments and figurative scenes from Eretz Israel, printed as a map-like woodcut, arranged in groups within rectangular and square frames, along with handwritten captions, descriptions and explanations (the titles are in square script; the descriptions are in cursive Italian Hebrew script).
The title appearing at the top of the leaf "Zot Igeret Mesaperet Yichusta DeTzadikaya DeAr'a Kadisha DeYisrael" (this is a letter recounting the attribution of Tzaddikim of the Holy Land of Israel…), indicates a relation between this print and a prose work by the same name, first printed in Venice, 1626.
The plaque depicts Kiryat Arba / Hebron, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Ramah, Safed, Tiberias and Haifa; the sites depicted include the tombs of the forefathers and foremothers in Hebron, the tombs of Joshua and Samuel, the Kidron Stream, the Red Sea, the tomb of Rachel, the Efrat and Jordan roads, and Batei Midrash, Torah schools and yeshivas in the various cities. Most of the plaque is dedicated to Jerusalem, and the largest illustration, appearing in the center, depicts the Dome of the Rock – "the gate of the place of the Temple", flanked on either side by the "Western Gate" and the "Gate of Mercy", towers, two lion heads (with long tongues resembling flames), surrounded by other sites: "the place of immersion of the high priest", "the Pool of Siloam" (depicted as a fountain), "Mount of Olives and the synagogue of David", the Western Wall, the Temple menorah, the Altar, "the place of the judges", the "guest house" Tower of David, "the pillar of the Sanhedrin of seventy", "the cedars of Lebanon planted by Solomon", and more. The depictions of Jerusalem also incorporate human figures and various scenes: the bringing of first fruits, the prophet Elijah at the gate of Jerusalem, a shofar blowing announcing the coming of the Messiah, the king's guards, the spies bearing a bunch of grapes, and two figures next to an Altar.


This print is not documented, and no other copies are known to us.

57X42.5 cm. Overall good condition. Old folding marks, slightly affecting text and illustrations, professionally restored. Old tears, mainly to margins, professionally restored. Stains. Pen inscriptions, apparently contemporary with printing, on verso, with the name: "Samuel Luzzatto".

Official papal privilege, issued to members of the Ambron (Amron) family of Rome on the authority of Pope Benedict XIV; decorated handwritten certificate. Rome, October 30, 1756. Italian.


Ink and paint on parchment.


Elaborate certificate, handwritten and hand-decorated, on a rectangular parchment membrane. Privilege issued to the four members of the Ambron family of Rome and their partners, by the papal authorities.
The certificate is surrounded by a colorful border decorated with vegetal and floral patterns, doves, peacocks, eagles and other decorations. The certificate is headed by the name of Roman Cardinal Girolamo Colonna (1708-1763), topped with three vignettes with heraldic symbols, held by cherubs (putti): the coat of arms of the Apostolic Camera – crossing keys under an umbrella; the Colonna family coat of arms – a pillar [Italian: colonna] headed by a crown; and the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XIV (1675-1758) – crossed keys and vertical stripes in red and gold.
At the bottom of the certificate is the wax seal of Cardinal Colonna, his signature and other signatures (in Latin characters).
This privilege was issued by the Cardinal, on the authority of the Pope, to four members of the Ambron family: Gabriele and his sons Ezechia, Leone and Sabato of Rome, and their partners: Alessandro Rossi and Abram della Vida of Ferrara. The document grants the partners the right to provide uniforms and shoes for the Pope's army, as well as to provide lodging for soldiers of the Papal army, and additionally exempts them from various restrictions, decrees and laws applying to Jews in the Papal States of Bologna, Ferrara, Romagna and Urbino, and granting them freedom from molestation, arrestment and imprisonment at the hands of the authorities.
The Ambron family was one of the most important in the Roman ghetto. The family first immigrated to Rome from Spain soon after the Spanish Expulsion in the 15th century and established a prominent socioeconomic position in the city. Some of them acquired a reputation as rabbis and scholars. The family was also active in trade, and as part of their merchant activity they supplied various goods and services to the papal authorities. From the end of the 18th century, subsequent to a deterioration in the Pope's attitude towards the Jews, they spread out to Livorno and Florence as well.
