Opening: $250
Sold for: $313

Printed invoices with handwritten signatures for receipt of distribution from Kollel Bukovina-Otinia, Jerusalem, (1899-1901).
"Here in the Holy City of Jerusalem I have receivedג€¦ 189-, sent to me by the holy Rebbe of Otinia, total ofג€¦". Kollel Bukovina-Otinia was established in Jerusalem as part of an outshoot of the "Kosov Kollel" which split into three Kollels: Vizhnitz, Kosov and Bukovina [later on "Kollel Zibernbergen" and "Kollel Mukachevo" were offshoots as well from the Kollel]. In 1895 the Rebbe Rabbi Chaim Hagar of Otinia (1863-1932), brother of the Rebbe Rabbi Yisrael of Vizhnitz, who also led a large Chassidic congregation in Galicia, was appointed to head the Kollel. For some reason these invoices were printed as a receipt of a distribution from the Rebbe and not from the Kollel, possibly due to some change in the official status of the Bokovina Kollel.
Many known families of Jerusalem are signed: Grossman, Held, Rosenblatt, Baharad, Teper, Kanal, Goldinger, Schertzer, Barzel, Feldman, Klein, Cahana, Eisenstein, Linder and others.
Dozens of leaves, approx. four invoices per column, total of approx. 350 signed invoices. Good-fair condition. Placed within orderly binder.

Auction 19 - Books, Manuscripts and Rabbinical Letters December 19, 2011
Opening: $200
Unsold
Signed agreement bill, in preparation for casting lots between the partners for the establishment of the "Shevet Achim" neighborhood adjacent to "Zichron Tuvia". Jerusalem, (1891).
Thirteen signatures which include: Yosef Rivlin; Yehudah Leib ---; Bechor Raphael Ashkenazi; Avraham Ya'akov ---; Avraham Yitzchak HaLevi; Liber Garfinkel; Getzel Sheinin; Moshe Kantrowitz.
The plot of land of the "Shevet Achim" neighborhood was purchased together with the plot of the adjacent neighborhood "Zichron Tuvia" [across the "Sha'arei Tzedek" hospital on Jaffa Street], with the participation of Jews of all sects, and therefore the neighborhood was named Shevet Achim after the verse "Hineh Ma Tov U'Ma Na'im Shevet Achim Gam Yachad". [Founder of the neighborhood, Rabbi Yosef Rivlin would eloquently say that "Shevet Achim" is an acronym of: Shfanionis, Baghdadis, Yemenites, Urfanians, Halabis, Greeks, and Maghrebis]. It is interesting that most of the land owners signed in this letter are Ashkenazis from Jerusalem.
Leaf 25.5 cm. Good-fair condition, mildew damage.

Letter by Rabbi Shabtai Sheftil HaLevi Av Beit Din of Setshin, to Rabbi Shlomo Rosenthal (Mahr) of Pest. Setshin, 1836.
Handwritten letter signed "Shabtai Sheftil son of the rabbi of Setshin", in which Rabbi Shabtai Sheftil requests that Rabbi Shlomo use his contacts and influence to assist him in securing a rabbinic position after leaving the Setshin Rabbinate. Much of the letter consists of a Jewish philosophical discussion. "ג€¦and this is the defective opinion of Spinozaג€¦ to which the answer isג€¦ and indeed in regard to the question by the Chacham Kant on the Rambamn [Moshe Mendelson] I saidג€¦".
Rabbi Shabtai Sheftil Ha'Levi Margaliot (Encyclopedia L'Chachmei Galicia, Volume 3, page 948; Ishim B'Tshuvot HaChatam Sofer, page 364), son of Rabbi Gershon of Ternopol, was a prominent disciple of Rabbi Yehoshua Heshel Av Beit Din of Ternopol author of "Sefer Yehoshua". He served as Av Beit Din of Keszthely from 1828, left due to a dispute with members of his congregation thereafter appointed Rabbi of Setshin. In Setshin as well, congregants made his life miserable and in his distress he turned to Rabbi Shlomo Rosenthal (see attached material). As indicated by this letter, Rabbi Shabtai Sheftil was forced to leave the Setshin Rabbinate: "Because I greatly lack livelihood, nevertheless, I thank the Almighty for ridding me of these evil people.."..
The recipient of the letter, Rabbi Shlomo Rosenthal-Mahr of Pest, rabbi and public askan, one of the most influential leaders of Hungary in those days, corresponded with many Torah leaders of his generation. On reverse side of letter, two lines were written by someone else: "Rabbi Sheftil grasped the fundamentals of religion and did not know the difference between right and left".
[3] pages, 24 cm. Good condition. Tear to third page [with slight damage to text] in place of the wax stamp. Folding marks. On back page an address in a foreign language and in Hebrew and a wax stamp of Rabbi Shabtai.
