Handwritten letter by Yechiel Brill, addressed to Mr. Bamberger (brother of Rabbi Yitzchak Zekel Bamberger, ABD of Kissingen, son of Rabbi Simcha Bamberger). Mainz, [1882].
“As soon as this letter reaches him, he will send me back my father-in-law’s reply [Rabbi Ya’akov Ha-Levi Sapir] on the Shemita related matter I have sent him, since I have received my father-in-law’s order to print it in the “Ha-Levanon” journal as soon as possible…”. 1882 was the first year of Shemita kept by the renewed settlement of the Land of Israel. Yechiel Brill (1836-1886) – founder of the “Levanon” journal and among the pioneers of Hebrew journalism in the Land of Israel. Immigrated to Israel around 1850 and settled in Jerusalem; married Ya’akov Ha-Levi Sapir’s daughter. Founded the second Hebrew printing press in Jerusalem in 1862, with the collaboration of Yoel Moshe Salomon and Michel Ha-Cohen; He began publishing the “Ha-Levanon” journal in February 1863.
