Walking stick. Germany 19th century. Wood; silver (stamped), engraved. Walking stick belonging to Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer from Berlin. On the silver handle the following inscription is engraved: “Rabbiner Dr Hildesheimer - Von Seinen Schülern, Purim 5651” – "from his students, Purim 1891.” Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer (1820-1899) was an outstanding leader. Student of the author of “Aruch LaNer” and Rabbi Isaac Barneis of Hamburg. In the years 1851-1869 he served as Rabbi of Eisenstadt and there established a yeshiva, the first of its kind, where secular studies were taught as part of “Torah im Derech Eretz”. In 1869 was appointed Av Beit Din in Berlin, where he established the Rabbinical Seminary and was the head of Orthodox Jewry in Germany. Height: 85 cm., length of handle: 9.5 cm.
