Two-branched Sabbath candelabrum made by a detainee in a Cyprus detention camp. Cyprus, ca. 1948.
Gypsum rock, chiseled and engraved; wood, sawed and painted; brass, cast and pierced.
Shield-shaped candelabrum, surmounted by two candleholders jutting outward symmetrically to the right and left. Two stone plaques are inlaid in the middle of the shield, both inscribed in Hebrew. The upper plaque inscribed "Memories of Cyprus 5708 [1948]," and the lower one inscribed "Shabbat Kodesh" ["a holy Sabbath"]. Supported on a four-step wooden pedestal.
