Torah scroll, Sephardic scribal script, placed in a Tunisian-style wooden case wrapped in drapery. [Israel, ca. 1960s].
Ink on processed parchment. The scroll is placed in a 13-sided wooden case draped in fabric – crimson velvet, machine-embroidered with silver threads. Dedicatory plaques, shaped like the Tablets of the Law, are attached to case; the inscriptions read: "In memory of R. Faraji Alush, his son… and his wife", "Donated by Kadara and Zahiya…". The drapery is embroidered with the Tablets of the Law, verses, Stars of David surrounded by flowers, lamps and dedications mentioning members of the Alush family.
R. Faraji Alush (1854-1921), Rabbi of Gabès (Tunisia), was a revered Tunisian Torah scholar. Author of Responsa Ohev Mishpat.
Height of parchment: approx. 50 cm. Light-colored parchment. Good condition.
Height of case: 74 cm. Diameter: approx. 34.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Breaks. Loss to one side of the crown.
Drapery: 57X113 cm. Good condition. Unraveling fabric and stitches and torn loops.
