Torah Scroll Case – Iraq

Torah scroll case (Sephardi). Iraq, [turn of the 19th/20th century]. Wood covered with sheet silver plaques, embossed and repouseé; ink on paper. No parchment (Torah scroll). Covered on the outside with sheet silver, decorated with repeated vegetal and floral patterns. Two bands with a repouseé dedication: “this case and Torah made by Meir and his brothers in memory of their father Michael Nathan and in honor of their mother Sarah…” (Hebrew). Hooks with bells, and steel-nails for bells on the upper part. On the inside are two pieces of paper (or parchment) with floral decorations and an inscription: “this Torah…and this case…in memory of their father Michael Nathan and his wife Sarah”. Some decorations on the upper part are made of copper-sheet. Height: 87 cm. Diameter: 27 cm. Good condition. Some wear and damages.
