Auction 81 - The Wily Lindwer Collection

Small Rosewater Bottle / "Rihanna" Chain – Tunisia

Opening: $200
Unsold
Two silver objects, Tunisia, [first half of 20th century].
Silver, cast, pierced, soldered, and engraved; wooden bead.
1. Small bottle for rosewater or spices. Hexagonal bottle, supported by dome-shaped stand. Three vegetal ornaments soldered onto upper part of container; one such decoration surmounted by bird. Additional bird ornament surmounts stopper. "Rihanna"-type chain connects stopper with bottle. Height: 16 cm. Warping. Missing bird decorations.
2. "Rihanna" chain. Chains of this type, characteristic of Tunisia, were produced in the past using a sophisticated repoussé technique that did not involve soldering. This technique was apparently introduced to Tunisia by Moorish silversmiths. Nowadays the links are simply soldered. Similar, smaller-sized links are a common feature of earrings and temple pendants (see above, and see also item no. 85). Approx. 50X2 cm.
