Transcript of a responsum letter from the rabbis of Baghdad, with four letters of approbation handwritten and signed by rabbis of Jerusalem – R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, R. Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, R. Eliyahu Kletzkin and the Rishon LeTzion R. Yaakov Meir. Baghdad, Adar 1925 – Jerusalem, Adar 1926.
The responsum letter from the rabbis of Baghdad discusses a proposal to destroy old synagogues and Batei Midrash in Baghdad, and build a new synagogue on that plot. The rabbis of Baghdad write that they gathered to discuss this matter, and reached the conclusion that this is prohibited. The letter is signed by 22 rabbis and yeshiva deans of Iraq (the signatures were transcribed on the present leaf).
This transcript of the responsum was sent to Jerusalem, where four prominent Jerusalem rabbis added their handwritten approbation to the ruling of the rabbis of Baghdad: two lines handwritten and signed by R. Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, approbation signed by R. Yaakov Meir (written by a scribe), approbation handwritten and signed by R. Kook, and approbation signed by R. Eliyahu Kletzkin (written by a scribe).
