Passover Haggada, "with a nice commentary and nice illustration of the wonders… and in addition [a map at the end of the book] the travels in the desert until the Land was distributed to the tribes of Israel and a sketch of the Beit Hamikdash… engraved into copper plates by the young man Avram Bar Ya'akov from the family of Avraham Avinu". Amsterdam, 1695. Two title-pages, the first is illustrated.
This haggada, illustrated by the artist Avraham (a German priest of the Reine region who reached Amsterdam and converted), is the first haggada illustrated by copper engravings, and one of the first Hebrew books illustrated using this printing technique, "to engrave and form by manual engraving in copper, whereas previously designs were etched in wood… as beautiful as possible". This edition was a model for many other haggadot printed after it, whether with a map attached or with the imitation of its illustrations (according to an article by Prof. B. Roth, The Illustrated Haggada in Printing, Areshet, 1961, pages 22-25 – see attached photocopy).
[1], 26 leaves, [1] folded map. Poor condition, detached leaves, moth damage, wine stains, wear and tear (the illustrated title page is torn and missing the bottom part, and the attached map is torn and missing a section of right fold). Antique fancy leather binding with Hebrew bullet "Haggada Shel Pesach", worn and damaged binding, without spine.
Ya'ari 59; Otzar Hahaggadot 93.
