Palaestina ex Monumentis veteribus Illustrata, Tomus I-III, Hadriani Relandi. Utrecht, 1714. Latin, with a little Greek, Hebrew and Arabic. Three volumes bound in one. First edition.
Differences exist among the various copies of this edition of the book, in several plates and in their place inside the book. This copy has 14 plates, some folded, 9 are plates with maps, some with Hebrew letters. The rest of the plates have chronological inscriptions or general historical information. This copy does not have the author's portrait but it has an engraving before the title page.
Hadriani Relandi / Adriaan Reelant (1676-1718) – Dutch geographer and cartographer , one of the first Orientalists. Professor of Oriental languages at the Utrecht University from 1701 and a lecturer on the antiquity of the Jewish People. In 1695, he was sent on a journey to Palestine and he surveyed 2,500 settlement points and mapped them.
