"Keren Hayesod, the New Settlement [Enterprise], 1936-1939." Map published by the Youth Department of the Head Office of Keren Hayesod. Jerusalem: Ha-Uman Press, 1940. Signed in print: "Lachs" [Oskar Lachs].
This map shows Palestine, from the Galilee Panhandle in the north to the Negev Desert in the south. Indicated are the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, Lake Hula, the main roads, and the cities of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Tiberias, Safed, and Acre. Labeled – in among the main cities, roads, and bodies of water – are 52 small points representing the new settlements established overnight as part of the Tower and Stockade enterprise. The names of the settlements are given in Hebrew and English. A compass rose-like image, depicting a tower and stockade, appears in the upper left corner of the area indicated as the Mediterranean Sea on the map.
The map covers half of a large sheet of paper. The other half contains excerpts from the founding charter of some of the Tower and Stockade settlements, along with two photographs of the Nir David settlement – one taken not long after its establishment, and the other taken three years later. The full sheet folds up into a leaflet with four pages of text. A map similar to this one, printed and published by the Jewish National Fund, is included in the map collection of the National Library of Israel. The NLI's copy features additional points indicating later settlements, established up until 1944.
Map 50X35 cm in size, on a 70X 50 cm sheet, folding up into leaflet, 25 cm. Good condition. Fold lines. Few stains. Minor blemishes. Points labeled with names of additional settlements added in handwriting on the map.
