Manuscript, Seder HaBrit / Mohel Book – Rawicz, 1828

Opening: $600
Unsold
Manuscript, Seder Brit Milah, with a mohel book. Rawicz, Poland, 1828. Fine copy of Seder Brit Milah, from the book Sod Hashem by Rabbi David of Lida. Square vowelized script. Written on the title page: “Here in Rawicz 1828…by the writer Shlomo son of R’ Zvi Hirsh Sefal Neustadt…”. Following the Seder Brit Milah is a mohel’s book with a list of 120 circumcisions, starting in 1824 (the list from 1824-1829 was neatly copied from a previous source). The britot took place in cities or villages in the Poznań area (families from Rawicz, Śrem and Zaniemyśl are listed). The mohel mentions a circumcision which he had done for his brother-in-law “the child Elazar son of the …R’ Elazar HaCohen”. At the beginning of the manuscript is a Yiddish inscription – instructions and medical guidance for mohalim. Signatures of Rabbi “Naftali Kara who lives in Śrem” – Rabbi Naftali Kara, c. 1789-1874, Otzar HaRabbanim 16139. Disciple of Rabbi Akiva Eiger, Rabbi of Śrem, Poland in the Poznan region. It remains ambiguous if he is the mohel who performed the britot or if this manuscript reached him at a later time. [30] written pages. 16 cm. Good condition, many stains. New binding, matching cardboard box, damaged.
