The Library of the Schocken Publishing House was established in the wake of the great burnings of the books at the hands of Nazis that occurred nationwide in Germany in 1933. These events were viewed as a call to action. The goal of the library's founders was to choose texts from the wellspring of Jewish literature of particular importance to Jewish readers in Nazi Germany. The books in the series focus on a broad range of topics, everything from philosophy and biblical commentary to scientific research, poetry, drama, and all forms of belle-lettres by Jewish authors. The books in the series – all uniform in their outward appearance – were designed by Moritz (Moshe) Spitzer.
