Letter from Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher of Greiditz – To His Friend Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer, Who Wished to Immigrate to Eretz Israel

Letter handwritten and signed by R. Eliyahu Guttmacher Rabbi of Greiditz (Grodzisk Wielkopolski). Sivan 1869.
Addressed to his friend R. Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer rabbi of Thorn (Torun). Written in response to a letter in which R. Tzvi Hirsch consulted with R. Guttmacher on his prospective immigration to Eretz Israel. R. Guttmacher expresses his reservations about the move: "…what will he do there? Who will provide for him?". The rest of the letter discusses the activities of the Yishuv Eretz Israel society, which had been founded at their initiative.
R. Eliyahu Guttmacher Rabbi of Greiditz (1796-1875), disciple of R. Akiva Eger. Renowned as a wonder-worker. Was very active in promoting and strengthening the settlement of Eretz Israel.
The recipient, R. Tzvi Hirsch Kalischer (1795-1875), a Torah leader of his generation, disciple of R. Akiva Eger and the Netivot HaMishpat. One of the first to promote and support the settlement of Eretz Israel.
