Letter of receipt for a donation to the city of Hebron, signed by the two Rabbis of the city. Hebron, 1904.
Signed by Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini known as the “Chacham” and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Ashkenazy, with the ink stamp of the "Sdei Chemed".
Rabbi Chayim Chizkiyahu Medini, author of Sdei Chemed (1835-1905, Otzar Harabbanim 6323), served as Rabbi in Constantinople, Karasubazar (Crimea) and Hebron. He was famous for his diligence and genius in both the revealed and hidden parts of the Torah. He published a huge encyclopedia named "Sdei Hemed" - 18 volumes, and many other books.
The sage Rabbi Menachem Mendel (Na’eh) Ashkenazy, (1869-1938), a Lubavitcher Chassid, was the Rosh Yeshiva of “Magen Avot” in Hebron. He is frequently mentioned in the books of his close friend, the author of the “Sdei Chemed”. That year he was appointed as Rabbi of the Ashkenazic community in Hebron. After the death of the Sdei Chemed he moved to Jerusalem and headed the “Kollel Chabad”. His son is the famous sage Rabbi Chaim Na’eh.
