A book by Charles Wilson that gives an overview of the city of Jerusalem in words and images. It contains engravings that depict Jerusalem and its environs: view of Jerusalem from Mount Scopus, view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, al-Eizariya (Bethany), and a view of the Mount of Olives from Mount Zion. The book also contains dozens of illustrations depicting gates, monasteries, and churches, people, attires, and markets in the Jerusalem region. Explanations and descriptions appear alongside the illustrations.
Captain Charles Wilson, who arrived in Jerusalem in 1864 at the head of an engineering team, served for decades as a military engineer, land surveyor, and archaeologist in the service of the British government and army. He published several books and albums about Palestine over the years.
XXII, 120 pp. + [4] plates (with tissue guards) and [1] map, 35.5 cm. Gilt edges. Overall good condition. Stains (mostly light). Minor blemishes. A tear at the joint between the front endpaper and binding. One engraving is partially detached. Loose pages; the binding is slightly damaged, mainly on the spine and at the edges.
