Esther scroll, placed in ornamented silver case. Vienna, 1886-1893.


Ink on treated parchment, in small format; silver, turned, repoussé and engraved (marked, maker's mark – KW = Karl Weichesmüller, operated in 1870-1893); gilt.
HaMelech scroll (most the columns begin with the word "HaMelech"); Lamed in "HaMelech" ornamented. Written in Stam script on three treated parchment membranes, 15 columns of text, 21 lines per column.


The scroll is placed in a cylindrical silver case, decorated with alternate strips of vegetal motifs on gilt background and tiny geometric patterns. A crown-shaped ornament tops the case, surmounted by a floral knop. Large, blank oval-shaped cartouche in the center of the case (faint remnants of old inscription, deleted).


Height of parchment: 12.5 cm; height of case (including handle): 36 cm. Overall good condition. The scroll is from a later period than the case.


Provenance: Estate of R. Zeev Wolf Gottlieb (1910-1983, brother-in-law of Rabbi Dr. David Moses Rosen, chief rabbi of Romania).
