Rabbi Chaim Shmuel HaCohen Konverti – Senior Rabbi (1810-1873), native of Italy; in 1927 immigrated to holy city of Tiberias and was among its greatest scholars. Following the destruction of the Galilee in the 1837 earthquake, he was sent as a rabbinical emissary to cities in Turkey and Italy in order to raise money for “Rabbi Meir Ba’al HaNes” fund in Tiberias. On these journeys his reputation as a Torah scholar became known to scholars of the Diaspora who cite sayings from him in many of their books. Upon the return of Rabbi Chaim Shmuel HaCohen Konverti to Tiberias in 1845, he was appointed as rabbi of the city in place of the Ga’on Rabbi Chaim Nissim Abulafia who relocated to Jerusalem.
