Frame for Ketubah – Damascus Work

Frame for Ketubah (Marriage Contract). [Syria or Eretz Israel, beginning of 20th century]. Damascus Work (copper and silver inlaid into brass). Fine frame, apparently used as a frame for a Ketubah. The internal part of the frame is designed as a Star of David, The surface is entirely decorated with flowers and leaves. At the top of the frame a Torah crown and at its sides emblems of Hamsa in which there is a symbol of the eye and the words: “Voice of rejoicing, voice of happiness voice of groom and voice of bride”. At the bottom is a pair of doves (symbol of love) and fish (symbol of fertility). Inscriptions: “Hai”, “Hai” and Star of David. Height: 50 cm., width: 42 cm. Tracks for placing the ketubah at the back of the frame (missing, except for one). Pegs.
