Folk art rug after a Bezalel rug. [Palestine/Israel, 20th century].
Wool knot-pile; cotton foundation.
Central panel in the form of the Tablets of the Law, depicting a seven-branch candelabrum. Stars of David comprise the candelabrum's base, with the Tablets of the Law appearing again within its central shaft.
While of distinctly amateur make, this rug closely resembles in design an early Bezalel rug. (See: Bezalel 1906-1929, ed. Nurit Shilo-Cohen. Jerusalem: The Israel Museum, 1983; p.157.)
178x128cm. Good condition. Some damage and repairs to bindings. Some stains.
