Embroidered Torah mantle, made and donated by Sarah Anav. [Anatolia or the Balkans?], 5635 (1874/1875).
Silk; silk embroidery; silver thread and gold purl embroidery.
Sephardic style burgundy mantle, with an opening at the back, as common in Torah mantles from Anatolia and the Balkans. The mantle is comprised of a rigid, circular upper part, with the skirt hung by a fine cord threaded through loops.
The mantle is adorned with colored floral embroidery on the upper part, skirt and around the edges. A star of David is embroidered on the front, surrounded by the dedication. Yellow pom-pom and tassel fringe.
Height: approx. 96 cm. Diameter: approx. 32.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Pom poms lacking. Minor defects and tears.
