Medal minted to commemorate the "Edict of Tolerance" issued by Emperor Franz Joseph II, which granted rights to the Jews in Austria. Austria, 1782.
Obverse: Portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph II, the legends "Iosephvs II Rom Imp Semp Aug" and "Tolerantia Imperantis" [tolerance rules]. Signed – Reich [Johann Christian Reich]. Reverse: A rabbi, Catholic bishop and a Protestant priest praying. Surmounted by an eagle (the empire's coat of arms) with the sign "In Deo"; surrounded by a legend in Latin – "Sub Alis Suis Protegit Omnes" [we all are sheltered under his wings], and on the bottom the legend "Ecce Amici" and the year 1782.
Diameter: 44 mm. Good condition. Slight defects.
