MiMizrach… [From the East (First letter about Zionism)], by Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines – a printed pamphlet. Lida (Belarus), Kislev 1908.
An open letter by the chairman of the "HaMizrachi" movement, Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines, calling to increase the activity of the movement. In the letter, Reines summarizes his ideological conception, according to which religion and Zionism are interconnected. He emphasizes the two holy duties of the "HaMizrachi" movement: the first, "to disseminate Judaism among the Hebrew nation in general and its youth in particular"; and the second, "to make the best efforts to buy land in Palestine and make preparations for its settlement".
Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines (1839-1915), a Lithuanian rabbi, established the "Torah and Science" yeshiva which combined general studies with religious ones. He was an enthusiastic Chovev Zion (lover of Zion) and one of the founders of "HaMizrachi" movement. He was deeply affected by the Zionist-religious doctrine of Rabbi Zvi Kalischer and Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever.
