Ein beitrag zur theorie der linearen homogenen differentialgleichungen dritter ordnung, doctoral dissertation in mathematics, by Rabbi Eliezer Lipmann Schlesinger. Berlin, 1888. Handwritten inscription and signature of author (in German).
The Ga’on Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Schlesinger (1860-1934). Exemplary personality of German Jewry, genius in Torah and exalted righteous individual. The Mashgiach Rabbi Yerucham Leibovitz of Mir described him as a “living Mesilat Yesharim [Path of the Just]”, the Rabbi of Ponevezh referred to him as “angel”. He was also referred to as: “the Chassid from Germany”, “the Lamed Vavnik from Hamburg” and more. Was one of “the four righteous individuals of Rabbi Getch” as the four sons of his father, Rabbi Getshlick Schlesinger – Rabbi of the ‘Kloiz’ of Hamburg, were known. Received rabbinical ordination from his father at the age of eighteen, and after his marriage moved to the city of Babruysk in order to study by the Ga’on Rabbi Raphael Shapira (eventually Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin). Spent his entire life teaching students, however, for a livelihood he taught mathematics and chemistry in a Talmud Torah of Hamburg as he was meticulous not to accept wages for the teaching of Torah. Due to his genius in mathematics he was offered to lead and chair the municipal university, however he rejected the proposal, preferring to teach Torah to the youth. His son is the Ga’on Rabbi Yechiel Michel Schlesinger, founder of “Kol Torah” Yeshiva in Jerusalem.
