Pirkei Avot, with the commentary of the Gaon of Vilna and the Derech Avot commentary by R. Meir, grandson of R. Avraham the brother of the Gaon of Vilna. Vilna, 1836. First edition of the Derech Avot commentary.
The commentary of the Gaon of Vilna is printed alongside the text of the Mishnah, with the Derech Avot commentary at the bottom of the pages. The lineage of the author of this commentary is stated on the title page: "Meir son of… R. Eliyahu, son of the renowned Tzaddik R. Avraham, brother of R. Eliyahu of Vilna…".
A piece of leather is affixed to the front board, with the name of the owner lettered on it: "Avraham son of R. Chaim Gottlieb". The front endpapers bear ownership inscriptions of his son R. Eliezer and his grandson R. Yaakov. A handwritten dedication on the front endpaper, presumably by the author, reads: "Gift to my relative, R. Avraham son of R. Chaim, so says Meir son of R. Eli.". The name of the recipient was deleted, and replaced with the name of his son "Eliezer [son of R.] Avraham". Stamp on the title page, presumably of R. Avraham Gottlieb.
Handwritten birth records on the back endpapers, of the sons and daughters of R. Avraham Gottlieb in 1824-1839, and of the sons of R. Eliezer Gottlieb in 1850-1868. The last endpaper bears a record of the passing of R. Eliezer in 1901.
Likutei Torah – novellae on the Torah portions by R. Meir son of R. Eliyahu, author of Derech Avot, was printed at the end of the book. His composition Nachlat Avot, comprising his will – on ethics and fear of G-d, was also printed in Vilna in 1836. His other works remain in manuscript.
